I am a Studio Artist at the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, Virginia. I paint mostly acrylic abstracts. My most recent paintings are here on the home page. Recent Paintings
I submitted these paintings to an art show subtitled "Activating the Void." The images on the left and in the middle are both of one painting titled "Color of Void." Being a colorist, I asked myself "What color would a void be?" And I decided it would be black; to activate the void would require colors in the black, but then it wouldn't be black anymore. How to solve this problem? I painted the canvas black and then put layers (glazes) of thin color on top of that. The resulting painting has a different appearance depending on the angle at which it is viewed and the angle of lighting. Viewed straight on, it presents a shiny, reflective black surface with just a suggestion of some color. Viewed from an angle and with proper lighting, the colors show up more brightly, as in the middle image. Maybe the void is not as empty and colorless as we are led to believe; maybe if we look at it differently we can see the beauty in it. The painting on the right, "Orb", suggests a planet in the void of outer space. It gives a sense of loneliness, beauty, and preciousness.
May 18 - June 23, 2012 -- I will be participating in Artomatic, a huge, free Art Fair with thousands of DC-area artists and performers. April - May, 2012 -- My paintings will be featured at Blackstone Coffee Shop, 1113 Jefferson Davis Hwy, Fredericksburg, Virginia. Opening reception will be Friday evening, April 6, as part of historic Fredericksburg's First Friday Art Walk.
December 11, 2012-January 20, 2013 -- I will be part of a 3-artist show titled "Push" at the ArtSpace Herndon. The other artists are Andrea Cybyk and Jane Johnson. We are all abstract painters.
